28 April 1970 27/04/2010

Posted by Matt Rowson in Thoughts about things.

April 1970. Watford had just survived their first season in the second tier, an achievement amply garnished with a run to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Elsewhere Diana Ross had just left the Supremes, Concorde had just flown its maiden supersonic flight, Black Sabbath had all but invented heavy metal. In the days building up to April 28th Apollo 13’s oxygen tank exploded and the Beatles split up. Something crazy was clearly going down.

On Tuesday 28th April 1970, it did.

Happy Birthday ig, you old bastard.

Old? OLD???? That’s not old!!
Clear off, the both of you. And stop saying ‘loanee.’

40 ? 40 ?? You don’t look a day over 52.

Have a good one, Sir Ig.

3. Sequel - 29/04/2010

Old?? I saw my first game at The Vic a month before IG was born! (Middlesbrough, 2-3, on Good Friday).

4. Ian Grant - 29/04/2010

Thanks, everyone. I think. πŸ˜‰

5. K Endean - 29/04/2010

so you missed Barry Endeans winner for Watford beating Liverpool. You must be young

6. Old Git - 30/04/2010

I didn’t miss it. And I didn’t miss Bert Slater’s own goal when we played Liverpool in the League Cup earlier that same season.
Or was it the season before?
Sorry, memory’s going.

7. Fred - 30/04/2010

Ah, 40. So good to be young with half your life ahead of you πŸ˜‰

So, young Ig, when’s the midlife crisis going to hit? Fast motorbike, chatting up 18 year olds, embarrassing clubbing, hair implants, that sort of thing… πŸ˜‰

JC here

dont forget Scullies goal agianst Man U and that Brian Owen goal. Both put Wrights goal at Wembley play off in the shade.

It is sad some can only read about them, you had to be there to believe it.

Old? I saw Pat Jennings, a young god, in goal for Watford, and Charlie Livesey playing up front. We wore waistcosts and had to remove our top hats so the people behind could see the match.
Now that’s old.

Still have nightmares about the sound of rattles….

Still have the scars from over-enthusiastic rattle wielders—
