Competition: Win a Cashmere Watford scarf from Savile Rogue 07/11/2014

Posted by Matt Rowson in Nonsense.

Once again, Savile Rogue have very kindly offered BHaPPY readers the chance to win one of the world’s finest cashmere football scarves in Watford colours.

Savile Rogue scarves (it says here…) give a nod to football terraces of yesteryear, shunning in-your-face logos and cheap nylon in favour of a traditional bar design and the comfort, quality and warmth of top grade wool.

Watford scarf 2Watford scarf 3To get your hands on the “faithful” version of the Watford scarf, here’s the deal…

Listed below the are the names of all the (other) clubs in the top two divisions in England.

You need to copy and paste these lists into the comments column below, and next to each enter the name of a Watford player past or present who has also turned out for the team in question in at least one competitive match.

  • No player can be used more than once
  • The winner is the entrant who fills the most slots – in the event of a tie, the winner will be the entrant whose listed players have STARTED THE FEWEST GAMES in Premier League, Football League or Southern League games for Watford (prior to the game with Derby County on Nov 22nd).  If there is still a tie, the earlier entrant wins.
  • Please enter player names in the format  J.Barnes .
  • Loans at Watford or at other club are fine, as long as the players concerned featured in at least one competitive game for each.

Entries close at midnight on  Saturday November 22nd.

Note that Savile Rogue are only able to dispatch the prize to a UK address.

Entries will not be published until the closing date.  Note that your own entry may appear automatically below the post on submission but this will not be generally viewable.

Great to see another one of these puzzles. Do players signed for Watford who didn’t play for us in the leagues (Prem, FL etc) count? I presume ones who played only as a sub count as zero starts. Also do the Watford Rovers and West Herts incarnations of Watford count?

Matt Rowson - 09/11/2014

Yes and yes to first two. I think it’s only reasonable to say that only players from 1896 (Southern League as West Herts) qualify, despite that players only need to have played competitively. Anybody who uses an earlier player gets penalised for being a smart arse

13. Big Al - 10/11/2014

Do previous incarnation of the clubs count – eg Swansea Town?

Matt Rowson - 10/11/2014

Swansea Town were merely renamed as Swansea City, cf Woolwich Arsenal, Newton Heath, Orient etc etc. Yes, appearing for Swansea Town is equivalent to appearing for Swansea City

14. Paul Willett - 10/11/2014

Hi Matt
Sorry if you’ve already answered this but each slot is filled by someone who has made an appearance, and the tie-break is down to the fewest starts. So a player who made one substitute appearance would could as zero towards the tie-break total and therefore are the best to include?

Matt Rowson - 10/11/2014

correct.

Harefield Hornet - 11/11/2014

And there was me thinking it was a bit of fun – Iooking at the above I expect most will be naming Arthur Scudbucket and Wilf Oldendaygit! among their answers! – Great fun trying to do it without reference books or the internet though! – more fun than Portman Road anyway!

Sorry to be a pain with further questions:
-Can we use Watford apprentices who were never signed to contracts and never appeared for Watford?
-For loan players do you mean that a player loaned between Watford and another club have to have played for both Watford and the other club (different to non-loaned players) or that they must have played competitively just for the other club?

Matt Rowson - 12/11/2014

– No, as per instructions each player must have appeared competitively for both Watford and club in question.
– As above, player needs to have appeared competitively for both clubs. Whether on loan or on permanent contract is irrelevant and rules don’t differ.
